Condition

Very good overall condition. There is a minute nick to the finial. The yellow decoration is a deeper tone and is less pastel when compared to the catalogue illustration. The work is much larger than it appears in the catalogue illustration.

Catalogue Note

Born in Switzerland, Werner Burri joined the Bauhaus Weimar in 1921 to start the "Vorkurs" taught by Johannes Itten.  Shortly after, in April 1922, Burri studied ceramics with sculptor Gerhard Marcks, his Formmeister (form master) and Master Potter Max Krehan, his Lehrmeister (craft master) at the school's pottery annex in Dornburg on the Saale River, about fifteen miles from Weimar. At the time, he was one of four Bauhaus student potters who successfully completed their journeyman examinations (along with Otto Lindig, Theodor Bogler and Marguerite Wildenhain).  In 1928 he took over Bogler's position as director of the modeling and design workshop at the Steingutfabrik Velten-Vordamm, where the present lot was created.
