Catalogue Note

The paintings illustrated here were commissioned from Rubens by Marie de Médicis, the widow of Henri IV, in 1622 for the walls of the Palais du Luxembourg, and they depict the life of Marie. She also planned a cycle representing the life of her husband, but they were not completed. The paintings are now housed in the Louvre, and were instrumental in introducing the art of Rubens to France.
