Catalogue Note

James Stuart, "The Old Pretender", and Maria Clementina Sobieska were married in 1719. After an unhappy marriage which produced two sons, she died in Rome in 1735 and he in Rome in 1766. They and both their sons were buried in St Peter's; in 1819 Pius VII erected a monument by Canova over the tomb of James and his two sons. The second plate of the later work is a reworking of one used in the first work.
