  • Rome, seventeenth century
folio (420 x 275mm.), tan morocco gilt, central cartouche composed of small floral and pointillĂ© designs with central black morocco inlay, covers composed of gilt scrollwork designs and pointillĂ© grounds, some of which are set on black morocco inlays, small cherub tool used four times on each cover, scrollwork at corners forming a perspectival frame, outer floral roll-tooled border, flat spine with black morocco strip inlays, small gilt stamps and pointillĂ© designs, red silk endpapers, binding only, rebacked in period style, extremities slightly rubbed, central cartouche on upper cover chipped

Catalogue Note

This binding is similar in design to a group commissioned for Urban VIII (1623-1644) and for Alexander VII (1655-1667), particularly with regard to the scrollwork and, in the case of a binding for Alexander VII, with an identical cherub stamp.
