James Ford, bookplate, initialled note on rear endpaper "perlegi apud Chamonix... mense Iulie 1857". 1857 was the year in which the Anglican chapel opened in the resort in response to the flurry of visiting Alpine adventurers.

Eobanus Hessus (1488-1540), dubbed the "German Homer" for the quality and scope of his verse, was a dipsomaniac epicurean whose most famous work, perhaps ironically, was his translation of the Psalter.
