first edition in french. Cardano (1501-1576) taught medicine and mathematics at Milan, Pavia and Bologna. De subtilitate, first published in 1550, is an encyclopedia of natural science, "a mine of facts, both real and imaginary; of notes on the state of the sciences; of superstition, technology, alchemy and various branches of the occult" (DSB). The edition was divided between L'Angelier, Le Noir and Foucher.
