Literature

E. Canetti, Masse und Macht (Hamburg, 1960)

Catalogue Note

The work considered by Canetti himself as his masterpiece, Masse und Macht (1960; 1962 English translation by Carol Stewart ['Crowds and Power']), analyses the mysterious phenomenon of the crowd and its influence on individual human behaviour - a theme which originated in the violence Canetti witnessed in Vienna between the wars.

The present manuscript appears to be a divergent draft for a part or parts of the work (cf. the chapters 'Die Meute' and 'Meute und Religion'). Part of Canetti's autograph English translation of Masse und Macht was sold in these rooms on 13 December 1994 (lot 112); a corrected copy of part of the final typescript of Carol Stewart's 1962 translation was sold in these rooms on 15 July 1999 (lot 236).
