Catalogue Note

first edition of the publication that launched Hegel’s reputation, containing several of his earliest writings. Hegel (1770-1831) and Schelling (1775-1854) had met as students at the theological seminary at Tübingen in the early 1790s; together with the poet Hölderlin they shared an interest in Spinoza, Kant and Fichte, and the French Revolution. Although the younger of the two, at the time of the publication of this journal, Schelling was already an established name with published works and a professorship at Jena, and Hegel was considered his disciple.
