Habans mounted at end of second volume, original wrappers very slightly soiled

Catalogue Note

first edition in book form. Flaubert's novel was originally issued in parts from October to December 1856 in the Revue de Paris and Flaubert was quickly put on trial for his offences against public decency. He was acquitted in February 1857.
