8vo (182 x 118mm.), printed on hollande, with presentation inscription on flyleaf, contemporary vellum by Gayler-Hirou, single red fillet on covers with initials j[ulia] d[audet] painted in red and gold on upper cover, spine lettered in red, blue and gold, marbled endpapers, uncut, with 2 pages of manuscript notes (one crossed through) entitled "Affaire Rouvier. Palais Royal. Attentat à la pudeur" loosely inserted, spine very slightly rubbed

Catalogue Note

first edition of this study of religious mania, presentation copy, inscribed by daudet to his wife, "A ma Julia chérie, cette oeuvre qui est notre oeuvre, Alphonse Daudet". Gayler-Hirou bound many of Daudet's works for Julia Daudet in the same style; their library was sold in Paris in 1941.
