Zhou Nianci's Collection of Paintings by Zhu Yuanzhi
Sotheby's Hong Kong is proud to present the collection of Zhu Yuanzhi's (Yun Gee) work belonging to Zhou Nianci, the author of one of the most important book on Zhu's life, "The Great Chinese Painter - Zhu Yuanzhi", Zhou spent seven years travelling around Europe and America, visiting friends of the artist to finish her book. By conducting numerous interviews, Zhou managed to provide some of the most precious and first hand information on Zhu in the book, including details on artistic growth and romances with three foreign women. Without a doubt, the book is a must for everyone who wants to study the artist.
Her collection includes three oil paintings and four sketches. "Right Route to Freedom" (Lot 30) was executed in 1947 shortly after the end of the Second World War. The painting reflects the spirit of freedom and justice which helped to end the war. It also honestly depicts the post-war mentality of the Americans.
Zhu also enjoyed watching plays when taking time away from painting. His work "Temptation", which was inspired by a legendary Chinese story, proves this. The four sketches in the collection (Lot 33, 34) best describe Zhu's passion for drama. As Zhou mentioned, "These four sketches are based on the French author Alexandre Dumas' classic adventure story, "The Three Musketeers". It tells an adventure story of a young man with his musketeer comrades in a fight to foil the schemes which threaten the regime of Louis XIII of France. Zhu, who is knowledgeable about both oriental and western culture, was particularly attracted by the story which shares the same quality of chivalry with the Chinese classic story, Three Kingdoms. That gave birth to the sketches." Among all Zhu's works, artwork inspired by drama is rarely seen. This makes the four sketches truly collectable.
