This work is in good condition. The canvas is original and was not relined. There is no visible paint loss. Some cracks, mostly located in the thick black areas of the painting have been restored. The work is varnished. The illustration in the catalogue is faithfull to the original, the colors are well reproduced

Il faut regarder le tableau en appréciant la lumière reflétée par la surface noire. C'est essentiel. Si l'on ne voit que du noir, c'est qu'on ne regarde pas la toile. Si, en revanche, on est plus attentif, on aperçoit la lumière réfléchie par la toile. L'espace de cette dernière n'est pas sur le mur, il est devant le mur, et nous qui regardons, nous sommes dans cet espace-là. C'est une relation à l'espace différente de celle que nous avons dans la peinture traditionnelle. Ce phénomène ne peut pas être photographié. La photo transforme cette lumière en une peinture banale où les valeurs sont fixes et produites par des gris différents.
