Catalogue Note
Though it appears in the Hearts section of the catalogue for the Five Themes exhibition (op cit.), this work clearly includes Trees and Gates as well as Tools (the hammer), making it a sort of anthology of Dine's oeuvre. When the work was created in the early 1980s, Trees and Gates were new themes, appearing almost for the first time in this composition; Dine decided that the Star of David would not become a recurrent theme; declaring it "much too specific" he did not use it again.
