“Sometimes they appear far off and indistinct: skiers on a distant slope, a man on a jetty, a figure on a boat or silhouetted on a rock, or smudged in a white-out snowstorm. Sometimes the distance between us and them is measurable not in yards or miles, but in years, as if the painting were looking backwards to another time. A painting may be filled with things but still record an emptiness, a hollow unease, a kind of blankness.
