Catalogue Note

"I have been making hybrid pictures out of various materials including paint, pills, insects, photocollage, epoxy resin, leaves, and hallucinogenic botanical materials on wood panels. This body of work was initially inspired by the pre-modern ideal that painting is a window to another reality, a 'vehicle of transportation' to the sublime and the transcendent. The rhetoric of psychedelia and various strains of alternative culture happen to posit similar values, and the parallels worlds intrigue me: escapism, altered consciousness, pleasure, beauty, desire and seduction, as well as the consumption of fetishistic commodities dependent upon the surplus wealth and leisure time." - Fred Tomaselli (The Fruitmarket Gallery, Eds., Fred Tomaselli: Monsters of Paradise, Edinburgh, 2005, p. 43)
