Catalogue Note
"Filling her spaces with variously colored walls, chandeliers, wall sconces, furniture items, wallpaper and various other forms of of interior décor, [Karen Kilimnik] wraps her paintings in an assiduously constructed and historicized context. The surrounding space thus re-creates an aesthetic context worthy of paintings that recall the work of genre painters of the 19th century, such as Jean-Baptiste Oudry, George Stubbs and Henry Raeburn. These installation strategies provide both a critical riposte to an oppressively administrative nature of the current experience of contemporary art while extending her conversation with historical forms and styles beyond the limits of the picture plane." - Dominic Molon (Karen Kilimnik, Zürich, 2006, p. 3)
