Condition
This work is in very good and sound condition overall. Surface abrasions, losses to paint, oxidation and other surface nuances are considered inherent to the nature of working with found material and consistent with the artist's intentions. At the horse's right shoulder, there is a slightly loose plank of wood. The feet are soiled due to outdoor installation.

Catalogue Note
There is a startling photograph in the exhibition catalogue of Butterfield constructing the mare Palomino alongside a fenced pasture where her real horses graze. The rumpled corrugated yellow metal and other scraps of wood and metal being assembled into Palomino seem somehow to partake of the same reality of horse existence as do the actual horse.
