Condition

This canvas is in good condition following recent restoration. On the reverse, there is a water stain along the length of the top edge, extending up to 5-6 inches down from the edge. Lifting paint along the upper tacking margin and turning edge has recently been consolidated and set down with the exception of a 1 x 2 inch loss on the upper tacking margin toward the back on the upper left of the edge. Adjacent areas of loss were filled with gesso and inpainted with acrylic paint, along with other signs of wear on the upper edge. Previous, ill-matched restoration along the right edge, associated with previous losses in the green/blue layer of pigment, was toned back so as to be less apparent. However, the previous restoration of this area, and restorations in the figure's cheek, involved building up of the surface perhaps to create brush texture followed by color toning to conform with adjacent paint, but the texture and color tone do not exactly match the original surface or pigment. The area in the figure's pink cheek is located approximately 14" to 18" and 19 ½ to 22 ½ inches from the left edge. In this general area, there are also some small spots of loss in the silkscreen pattern of the jaw line and above the ear which are inpainted with the same slightly mismatched pink tone for the flesh but a diligently recreated dot pattern. The edges overall exhibit more inpainting and slightly altered texture from the previous restoration, in addition to the upper and right sides already mentioned. --intermittent along the length of the bottom edge, particularly between the neck and hand --left edge running 10 inches up from bottom left corner and intermittent along the top half of the left edge. All edges are strip relined on the reverse.
