Condition

Colours: The colours in the catalogue illustration are fairly accurate, although the overall tonality is slightly richer and deeper in the original. The colours throughout are stronger and more saturated in the original: the reds to the top of the right edge and to the length of the left edge tend more towards rich crimson and the yellow-brown throughout the background more to richer ochre-yellow. Condition: The work is in very good condition. The canvas is very slightly loose on its stretcher and there is slight canvas draw to the upper right corner. The four corners are very slightly rubbed and there is a small protrusion to the centre of the lower edge where the canvas is slightly raised from the stretcher bar. Scattered minor rub marks are visible at intervals to the extreme edges. There are a few very fine surface cracks throughout the work, predominantly to the thicker paint in the pink pigment in the lower section, to the pale blue pigment to the centre of the work, and to the ochre yellow paint in the top left corner, some with raised edges. Further tiny matrices of drying cracks are visible to the purple and red paint in the top part, to the top of the blue paint and to the green paint arches which border the central image. There are a few further scattered spots of fine stable surface cracks elsewhere, including several fine tension cracks to places on the extreme overturn edges. No restoration is apparent under ultraviolet light.
