A FINELY ENAMELLED SAUCER DISH BY LIU YUCEN (1904-1969) 20TH CENTURY

the widely flaring sides rising from a short straight foot to an everted rim, finely enamelled to the interior with a gilt medallion enclosing large peony blooms borne on leafy stems emblematic of Spring, all above the name and seal of the artist, the reverse with the four-character seal mark Jing de zhen zhi, fitted box; together with an appreciation by Wang Xiliang (a National Ceramic Master in Jingdezhen).

Liu Yucen (1904-1969) was one of the pre-eminent ceramic artists active in Jingdezhen during the Republic period, and was known from 1928 as one of the 'Zhushan Ba You' , the 'Eight Friends of Zushan'.
