comprised of several sections, the front face with a large central panel flanked by four smaller panels, each elaborately and intricately gilt and highlighted in red, green and black lacquer with pairs of phoenix, peacocks, herons, ducks, partridges and other birds, perched on rockwork interspersed with prunus, chrysanthemum, magnolia, lotus, peony, lilies and bamboo, all reserved on a bright red lacquer ground, surmounted by an elaborate surround decorated with raised gilt lotus scrollwork, the reverse lacquered black highlighted in gilt with a tranquil mountain landscape, the base lacquered black
