Description

of rectangular lobed shaped section, the cover intricately decorated with figures engaged in various pursuits in and around a tall pavilion, all on a ground of stylised land, air and sea diapers, the raised border with a circular diaper pattern, continuing down the sides, the inside of the cover with a flowering peony sprig, the interior lacquered red and fitted with a tray and liner

Catalogue Note

An almost identical box and cover described as Ryukuan and dated 18th century was offered in these rooms 1st November, 1985, lot 239. Another similar 'Liuqiu Islands' box and cover, dated 17th / 18th century was offered in these rooms, 12th May 1989, lot 561.
