Catalogue Note

Verneh horse covers such as this were made in the Karabagh area of the Southern Caucusus and generally depict a camel caravan or are embroidered with flowers. The lot offered here is decorated with a mixture of the two patterns as the popular caravan scene is richly embellished in the background with stylized flowers. Interestingly, this verneh not only depicts camels placed in horizontal rows, one after another, but also other animals in vertical columns. Rows of these unusual smaller animals also serve as borders on the sides of the verneh. The appearance of animals in vertical rows adds an intriguing three-dimensional quality to the composition that is rare in shaddas. A single panel from a verneh horse blanket with a similarly rich, caravan and flower, decoration was sold Sotheby's London, April 17, 2007, lot 38. Another verneh depicting a caravan was sold Sotheby's New York, June 3, 1989, lot 145.
