Catalogue Note

The present lot, with its unusual and highly archaic design, is a rare example of carpets woven in Senna, Heriz, and Karadja in Northwest Persia during the nineteenth century. The oversize central design element, which fills out the field almost entirely, can be considered as the early version of the hallmark medallions of later pieces from Heriz and Karadja. Related carpets with a similarly early archaic design include Sotheby's New York, June 13, 1981, lot 496, and Sotheby's New York, January 21, 1990, lot 269.
