Catalogue Note
A very similar velvet, with 'floating' flowerheads between the major and minor motifs, made up into a cope, is in the Sergiev-Posad Museum Preserve (Zagorsk), inv.no.2287, illustrated Raby, Julian and Effeny, Alison (eds.), Ipek, The Crescent and the Rose, Imperial Ottoman Silks and Velvets, Istanbul, 2001, fig.48, p.248; the inscription at the neck of the garment states that it was donated to the monastery in 1652. For another velvet with similar star blossom designs in the British Museum (inv. no. 86-1878), see Baker, P., Islamic Textiles, London, 1995, p.97.
