Catalogue Note

John Varley, like other artists of his generation extensively travelled the British Isles in search of subjects. However, his permanent home was in London and throughout his career he painted the city in watercolour. This view shows the Royal Observatory in the foreground, the Thames in the middle ground and the city of London, with Saint Paul's Cathedral dominating the skyline beyond. Another watercolour of this view was sold in these Rooms on the 16th July 1998, lot 109 (£8,050).
