Catalogue Note
William Callow's scenes of Frankfurt were reputedly favoured by Queen Victoria. During a private visit to the Annual Exhibition of the Suffolk Fine Art Society in 1852, the Queen praised Callow's landscapes to her attendant audience. On a separate occasion at the Old Watercolour Society Exhibition in 1869, a watercolour by Callow was exhibited replacing Edward Burne-Jones's Phyllis and Demophoön, the nudity of which had apparently scandalized visitors.
