William Callow R.W.S. 1812-1908

William Callow lived in Paris from 1829 to 1841. In the summer of 1836 he embarked on a walking tour in the South of France. His diary entry for the 15^th June describes Montrichard as built on a steep slope with ‘the ruins of a fine old castle at the summit'. He recalled that he 'spent a quiet evening on the banks of the river, a lovely spot’ (Jan Reynolds, William Callow, 1980, p. 110).  The castle was formerly the home of the Dukes of Anjou and the site of a siege when Philippe Auguste battled Richard the Lion Heart for the English throne in 1188.
