Condition
The work is in good condition. The sheet appears to be laid down. There has been some minor light fading. The gum arabic remains uncracked and well preserved.

Catalogue Note
Edward Lear visited Malta three times. In 1848, 1862 and once again in 1866. Stylistic comparisons with later works suggest that he drew this watercolour during his final visit to the island in 1866.
Franklin Lushington, who once owned this work, was not only a friend of Lear but also the brother of the Chief Secretary to the Government in Malta.
