Catalogue Note
Between moving to Paris in 1818 and his death in 1828 Richard Parkes Bonington undertook several sketching tours of the Normandy coast. In 1823 Bonington is recorded as drawing in the ports of Dunkerque, Calais and Dieppe, gathering material together for a commission he had received to illustrate J.F. D'Ostervald's Excursions sur les cĂ´tes et dans les ports de France. Although the present work was never intended to be included in this commission, the subject was clearly one that interested the artist during the 1820's.
