Catalogue Note
This drawing would appear to date from the early 1780's, stylistically comparable to two works of a similar date and size; Wooded landscape with Figures, Cows and Cottages (Rhode Island School of Art and Design Museum of Art, Providence) and Wooded Landscape with Shepherd driving a Flock (Ashmolean Museum, Oxford).
The precise identity of the church in this drawing is at present unknown. Recognisable architectural details are rare in Gainsborough's drawings. Examples of securely identified architectural features include; Glastonbury Abbey (formerly in the collection of Sir John and Lady Witt) and Tintern Abbey (formerly Oppé Collection, now Tate Gallery).
