with powdered hair en queue, wearing a grey coat, yellow waistcoat and white cravat, oval, gold frame with seed pearl border
Condition
The work is in good condition. The colours are fresh and strong. When the work was placed into its frame, probably in the early 19th century, the ivory was slightly cut down. This has meant that the last digit of the date (l.r.) is missing.

Catalogue Note
Sir John Swinburne was born in Bordeaux, France in 1762. He succeeded to the Baronetcy in 1786. Between 1788 and 1790 he served as a Member of Parliament for Launceston, and he acted as Sheriff of Northumberland in 1799. He married Emilie Elizabeth Bennett in 1787, with whom he had a son. Sir John died at the age of 98 in 1860 and was succeeded by his grandson.
