Catalogue Note

Cornelius Hendrickson Kortright purchased Hylands House, Essex in 1797 and lived there until 1814. Of Danish descent he had made a fortune in the sugar trade. While at Hyland's, he set about enlarging the house and even employed the fashionable garden designer Humphry Repton to re-design the park land.
