  • the first extensively inscribed u.c.: James Gibbs Architect/The original church which existed since the/time of Henry VIII was much decayed and in/danger of falling, Gibbs was appointed to/design the present building several schemes/were prepared including a circular Church/which was approved but laid aside on account/of cost building commenced 1721 finishd 1726 / cost £32,000 the ceiling of the nave is elliptical / Gibbs considered better for sound than semi/circular, enriched with panels by Signori Artairi and Bagutti Walls Portland Stone. Gibbs Architecture; the second inscribed u.c.: The Church of St. Martin in the Fields / Westminster; both further inscribed with architect's notes
