Catalogue Note
In his autobiography William Callow records his first trip to Dartmouth in 1842 as part of a journey to Plymouth. Having spent most of his artistic career in Paris Callow was considerably out of touch with life in England. This did not deter him and by the time he made his trip to Dartmouth he had many pupils, many of them members of the aristocracy. In the same year Callow was able to take a house in Charlotte Street, London.
