Catalogue Note

Cox supplied topographical watercolours for engraving as early as 1820. First producing six watercolours of the city of Bath for publication, the present work is one of 31 watercolours that Cox produced in 1836 to illustrate Thomas Roscoe's book, Wanderings and Excursions in North Wales. All these works were engraved by his friend, the Birmingham engraver William Radclyffe. Cox also illustrated the accompanying volume Wanderings and Excursions in South Wales, published a year later in 1837. These demonstrate Cox's significant contribution to English book illustration.
