Catalogue Note
The town of Boston lies in Lincolnshire, on the east coast of England. De Wint has placed the viewer some distance from the town, in the Fens. Clearly visible is Boston's most notable landmark: St. Botolph's Church. The tower, or Stump, as it is locally known, is the highest in England.
De Wint's wife came from Lincolnshire. During their frequent visits to the area De Wint painted the local topography many times. It has been suggested that the present work dates from c. 1830. We are grateful to John Ellis for identifying this view.
