Catalogue Note
Throughout his life John Varley made topographical tours to sketch the countryside of England and Wales. In 1803 Varley travelled to Yorkshire and was drawn to the ruins of Bolton Abbey. The crumbling, ruined medieval structure held a fascination for Varley and other artists. The present work depicts the front door of a cottage in close proximity to the Abbey. The artist presents an intimate view of the rough-hewn stone and over-hanging timbers lending a sense of veneration to the building. Another drawing of this entrance in pencil entitled Cottage at Bolton, Yorkshire, is in the Paul Mellon Collection, Yale.
