Catalogue Note

Current scholarship dates this drawing to circa 1770 and the Late John Hayes suggests that it relates to a drawing in the Huntington Library and Art Gallery, San Marino, entitled Hilly Wooded Landscape with Herdsman and Cattle, (John Hayes, The Drawings of Thomas Gainsborough, no. 313, pl. 108).

The gold stamped monogram, which appears twice in the lower right hand corner of the sheet, is likely to indicate that Gainsborough felt this drawing was finished and presentable for sale, or as a gift.
