Francis Lindo, fl.1755-1765
- Francis Lindo
- Portrait of a gentleman, traditionally identified as Lord Chesterfield
- signed and dated 1765
- oil on canvas, in a painted oval
- 75x63cm.; 29½x25in.
The sitter cannot be identified as Philp Dormer Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield since he is not wearing the Order of the Garter. It is possible that the portrait could portray Sir William Stanhope (1702-1772), his younger brother. Sir William was made a Knight of the Bath in 1725, and although it would be highly unusual for a holder of the order to be depicted without the Star and Sash, it is not entirely without precedent.
