Catalogue Note

Birket Foster's idealised view of an unchanging and peaceful England is captured in this watercolour. Foster portrays a charming scene, undefiled by urban squalor or poverty and the menace of industrialisation which was taking place at this time. Rather than intended as a documentary account of the realities of everyday life, it is an exercise in idyllic nostalgia.
