Catalogue Note

This highland scene features Taymouth Castle, situated near Perthshire.  The castle was built on the site of the medieval Balloch Castle by John Campbell, 2nd Marquess of Breadalbane, near the 16th century village of Kenmore and where Loch Tay meets the River Tay.  The construction of the Neo-Gothic castle was concluded in time for Queen Victoria and the Prince Consort's visit to the area in 1842.  Queen Victoria was enthused by her reception, and stated: "The firing of the guns, the cheering of the great crowd, the picturesqueness of the dresses, the beauty of the surrounding country with its rich background of wooded hills, altogether formed one of the finest scenes imaginable."
