Catalogue Note
Le prototype du dessin, celui du couvercle, existe à partir du XVIIIème siècle.
The present box and cover is closely related to another slightly larger box of the same decoration of grazing deer beneath a peach tree by the river, but with the side of the box and cover decorated with panels divided by pierced gilt-bronze dragons, from the Kitson collection, sold in our London rooms, 30th May 1961, lot 421; and another box of this type, in the Civiche Raccolte d'Arte Applicata, Castello Sforzesco, Milan, illustrated in Dr. Gunhild Gabbert Avitabile, Die Ware aus dem Teufelsland, Hannover, 1981, pl. 62. See also a box and cover of similar form but with a different motif on the lid, from the Linden-Museum, Stuttgart, illustrated ibid., pl. 61.
