Description

of deep form on a flat base with raised central boss and moulded rim, decorated in cobalt blue and overglaze lustre with a central tripartite armorial shield with fleur-de-lys motifs, the arms enclosed by spiralling gadroons incised and painted with dot-and-stalk and wheel patterns, further panels of similar decoration extending to the rim, the back with radial lines in the central recess surrounded by stylised leaves and scrolls, two rim holes for suspension

Catalogue Note

The fleur-de-lys in the centre of the shield are commonly found in Spanish arms of this period (cf. Ecker 2004, no.75, p.94 and 157). The particular arms represented here are of an unidentified patron.
