Description

  • both signed kamtarin Mohammed ibn Khoddadad
gouache heightened with gold on paper, laid down on stout paper, margins ruled in gold, borders of scrolling foliate motif in colours, margin with floral sprays, birds and butterflies, one miniature inscribed with 'majlis homayum padshah' identifying the scene, both with signature and the date 12(0)4, in old frames with original labels from the framer Harlow, McDonald and Co in New York

Catalogue Note

Muhammad ibn Khoddadad painted in the Safavid style, and was particularly well known for his bird and flower paintings.  These miniatures indicate his skill at portraiture as well, and it seems likely that the margins are also his work.
