Catalogue Note
Please see Pope, A.U., A Survey of Persian Art, Volume XI, Textiles, Ashiya, 1981, pl.1053, for a large cover, Collection Gulbenkian, with a similar lobed medallion enclosing flowers, laid on a blue twill ground. Whilst the individual motifs in this textile are drawn from the classic repertoire of 17th century Safavid silks, the bold scale of the pattern owes more to carpet design of the period.
