This unusual Caucasian carpet has a design clearly based on Central Persian 'vase' carpets such as that in the collection of Colonial Williamsburg, see Lanier, Mildred B., English and Oriental Carpets at Williamsburg, Williamsburg, Virginia 1975, pl. 16.  Here, the more stylized palmettes, rosettes and pineapples within cartouches are flanked by diagonal lozenges enclosing S-motifs that are found on other 17th to 19th century Caucasian weavings and embroideries, such as figs. 48 and 49 (emboideries) and  4 and 67 (rugs) in Kirchheim, E. Heinrich, et al., Orient Stars, London and Stuttgart, 1993.   The palmette design here appears to be rare with the closest parallel being a palmette and tree carpet in the Textile Museum, Washington, D.C., see Yetkin, Serare, Early Caucasian Carpets in Turkey, London, 1978, fig. 200.
