A large and impressive pair of French enamelled 'Persian-style' leaded-glass double-doors J.D.Imberton, Paris, dated 1882

signed, each narrow wooden framed leaded-glass section painted either with a mosque lamp or hookah base bottle vase issuing formal stylised flowers and bunches of grapes standing on ledges, flanked by columns and arches entwined with leaves and painted with  rosettes

Whilst window panels decorated by Imberton are recorded, such as the example sold in these Rooms, 2nd July 2005, lot 124, signed and dated 1887, doors of this nature are extremely rare.

Little is known of J.D.Imberton other than that he worked for the Paris decorating company of Bucan and Duponthieu from 1882, exhibited at the Paris Exposition Universelle, 1878, and designed for Appert Frères in Clichy. His style of enamelling - in the Persian manner - is very similar to that of the better-known Philippe-Joseph Brocard, who also exhibited in Paris at the expositions and was a great influence on the young Emile Gallé.
