An elegant astrolabe by 'Alî ibn Sâdiq al-Qummî, dateable ca. 1800

This beautifully-executed little instrument is typical of the astrolabes of the maker, who is in all probability identical with the celebrated and prolific Hâjjî 'Alî.

The epithet hâjjî indicates that Hâdjî 'Alî had performed the pilgrimage to Mecca. His astrolabes, of which some 20-odd are known, are distinguished by their exquisite floral decoration on all available surfaces as well as their technical competence.

The rete bears pointers for 29 named stars. The mater is engraved with a gazetteer for 34 localities mainly in Greater Iran, displaying latitudes, longitudes and qiblas. There are plates for latitudes 29°, 30°, 32°, 34°, 36°, 37°, and 38°. On the upper back there is a quadrant of trigonometric markings, a solar quadrant, and below the horizontal diameter there is a double shadow square surrounded inside and out with astrological information. The alidade is original.
