A fine pair of Italian retour d'Egypte ormolu and patinated bronze four-light candelabra

Naples, early 19th century, after the French Empire model

Provenance

Sotheby's, London, June 13, 2001, lot 382

Catalogue Note

Based upon a French design by Charles Percier in the Louvre (RF30630) and originally conceived as a drawing for console supports (illustrated Hans Ottomeyer and Peter Pröschel, Vergoldete Bronzen, vol. I, Munich, 1986, p. 336, fig. 3.5.4), the present candelabra are of Italian rather than French manufacture.  Another similar, although larger pair of  Neapolitan manufacture, is at the Reggia di Caserta in the sala di Marte (see Chiara Garzya, Interni Neoclassici a Napoli, Naples, 1978, ill. XVI).
